Feelings of Hopelessness
As I watched the events at the capital unfold, my stomach churned. The violence, the anger, the mob mentality became too much to watch. At one point, I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry. But, just as I felt a breakdown creep up, scriptures flooded my spirit.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV)
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV)
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.” (Psalm 89:14 NIV)
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 NIV)

This is not the time to feel defeated or hopeless. Instead, we must lean on the Scriptures we’ve read, on who we know God to be, and on who we know ourselves to be. This life can surely take us on emotional roller coasters. But, our faith keeps us steady.
“‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
