Belief not Works
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV)
John 3:16 is filled with an amazing truth that our belief in Jesus, not our works, is the only requirement for an eternity in heaven at the end of our lives. Truly, the only thing we have to do to have a relationship with God is to believe in Jesus.
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” (John 14:6 NIV)
There is no amount of time we can spend reading the Bible, there is no amount of “nice” things we can do for people, there is no amount of worship music we can sing that will gift us a relationship with God. Sure, these things may be platforms by which we strengthen our faith and experience the voice and presence of God, but the absolute only thing we need for our relationship with God is to believe that Jesus is who He says He is, our Lord and Savior.
Once we believe that, our eternity is secure in heaven and everything else will come with it. And as our relationship with God grows, we’ll want to read more of the Bible, we’ll want to hear more of God’s voice, we’ll want to worship more, we’ll want to be better to people.
If you are struggling to believe, ask God for the grace to believe. Ask God to show up in your life. And He, being the best Father we can ask for, will undoubtedly give you the grace to believe, and show up in your life like you would never imagine.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)
