The Weight of Perfection

I wish I could say it’s easy for me to spend quiet, uninterrupted time with God. I wish I could say every time I find myself in a situation where I can offer the Gospel, I do. I wish I could say every time I sit down to hear from God in His word, I never get distracted. But, wishing all these things is wishing for perfection, and of course, perfection is a standard we’ll never reach.

Perfection is a weight we were never called to bear. If we knew every verse of scripture available, we wouldn’t need the faith necessary for God to provide words in sticky situations (Luke 12:11-12, Mark 13:11). If we did everything right, all the time, we wouldn’t need the saving grace, mercy and forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ. Without faults, we would only have empty testimonies to share, and who can relate to that?

Our deepest regrets, fears and inadequacies create a void that God fills perfectly. In spite of every flaw we know to be true about ourselves, God doesn’t disqualify us. Instead, He continuously opens doors for us, continuously allows us to experience His miracles, and continuously loves us so that we can boast only in Him.

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.'” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NIV)

Through our mistakes, we draw closer to God and rest our faith in His power (1 Corinthians 2:5). Don’t beat yourself up when you fail. Instead, repent (if necessary) and learn, letting that mistake guide you through the next situation.
